SUN AND TCS TEAM TO DELIVER SECURE OFFICE AUTOMATION AND WEB SOLUTIONS
Secure Office Automation and Web Solutions Designed To Meet Today's Business and Security Requirements
Washington D.C. - June 9, 1998 -Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Trusted Computer Solutions, Inc. (TCS) today announced increased joint marketing and secure solutions initiatives that strengthen their product lines and give government and commercial customers secure new ways to accomplish office automation and leverage the power of the Internet for competitive advantage.
Under the initiative, TCS is developing two new commercial products that run on Sun's Trusted SolarisTM operating system. The first, SecureOffice, is a new and innovative desktop designed to provide secure access to multiple Microsoft Windows and UNIX applications running at different sensitivity levels, all from a single computer. The system allows users to simultaneously see, manipulate, and cut-and-paste Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and UNIX applications operating at numerous sensitivity or classification levels.
"SecureOffice provides the best of both worlds," said John Marselle, president of Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc. "SecureOffice allows our customers to use Microsoft Windows office automation applications while maintaining the security and performance that their mission-critical Unix-based applications require. Combine this with the cost-effectiveness of our sub-$3000.00 Ultra 5 desktop and our customers now have a great competitive advantage."
The second product, SecureGate, the Secure Web Server, allows secure Web browser access from one security domain to another. "In the commercial world this SSL-enabled web server provides military grade security for commerce-based Web servers," said Mike Burgoon, president of Trusted Computer Solutions, Inc. "SecureGate can be transparently added into any existing architecture by inserting it between the Internet and a company's Intranet. The Secure Web Server will greatly enhance the security posture of the site, reducing if not eliminating the possibility of the site's internal servers being hacked. Plus, because it incorporates C2Net'sTM Stronghold SSL with 128-bit encryption, the privacy of all user transactions is ensured."
"In the DoD realm, this gateway allows a user on a network at one classification level to directly browse Web servers on a network at a lower classification level. This is the only commercially-available product that offers this capability," Burgoon continued.
"The Trusted Solaris environment offers users a highly secure operating system with distributed client-server computing, along with the ease of use, power and system management available from Sun's commercial products," said Joe Alexander, Trusted Solaris Product Line Manager. "Information can be shared throughout the entire enterprise with strict security maintained. Customers can implement a consistent enterprise-wide security policy, relying on protection within the Trusted Solaris environment. Selected features can be enabled or disabled to configure a system that meets a site's security and usability requirements."
"Computer security isn't just a priority for government organizations; it's a must for everyone. Commercial and financial institutions need to secure their desktops, firewalls, communications gateways, web and commerce servers, guards and databases," said John Marselle. "Trusted Solaris and the TCS solutions reinforce our partnership and the commitment to provide the best secure products to the entire enterprise, from defense to banking to internet commerce."
Sun supplies government and commercial customers with distributed computing technologies, products and services. Sun's innovative network computing solutions use "open" (non-proprietary) technologies and include networked workstations and servers, operating systems software and other value-added technologies. Sun systems are used by governments and commercial organizations worldwide for many demanding tasks ranging from command and control, internet commerce, law enforcement, land management, geographic information systems, traffic monitoring, and tax form processing to delivering social services.
