Trusted Computer Solutions Announces Release of the Trusted Gateway System (TGS)

WASHINGTON, DC August 1, 1999 - Trusted Computer Solutions, Inc. (TCS), a leader in the delivery of expert security solutions for the Department of Defense and US Intelligence Community, today announced the release of the Trusted Gateway System (TGS) hosted on Sun Microsystems' Trusted Solaris™ operating system. Trusted Solaris is a world-renowned, ITSEC E3 evaluated secure operating system that is now available and currently being used by Government and commercial organizations for securely processing information.

Secure Transmission of Bulk Data from Low to High
The TGS provides a secure one-way transfer of data from one network to another higher classified network. Using the TGS, an organization can move large quantities of practically any type of data such as imagery, maps, and documents from one network to another with ease. Data of any format or from any operating system, be it UNIX or Microsoft, can be transferred using the TGS. Security is provided by Sun Microsystems Trusted Solaris™ operating system and TCS's Secure Foundation software.

TGS Features
The TGS provides a number of security features that help ensure a safe and reliable mechanism for transferring data from one classified network to another higher classified network. Aside from the Mandatory Access Controls, role based administration, use of least privilege, and removal of the super-user root account indigenous to Trusted Solaris, there are a number of other security features.

As each file is transferred from one level to the other, it may be virus scanned for Microsoft-type PC viruses. In addition, the use of the TCS Secure Foundation software provides a number of security and functionality capabilities. The TCS Foundation include TCSecure:eFilter, a sophisticated firewall-like kernel level IP packet filtering capability, and TCSecure:AdminSuite, a collection of GUI-based tools for easily administering the system.

"The TGS is the first of its kind in that it is a COTS product developed to meet a specific and widespread need within the Department of Defense: moving large volumes of data up from a lower classification level," said James E. Maple, Vice President of Trusted Computer Solutions.

"TCS is working hard to support the advancement of security solutions hosted on Trusted Solaris which provides vital security at the operating system level," said Mr. Maple.

The TCS TGS security technology is based on Sun Microsystem’s Trusted Solaris™ which is ITSEC certified at the E3 (Labeled Security Protection) level of assurance. This certification is the highest of any other commercially available system in its class, ensuring that TCS customers have the most advanced secure operating system available today.

Trusted Solaris supports the Sun UltraSPARC™ family today (Ultra™ Workstations through the Ultra Enterprise™ 6500 Servers). Trusted Solaris and the TGS are fully Y2K compliant.

Security Accreditation Status
The TGS is based upon a similar system developed by the Naval Research Laboratory (in conjunction with TCS). That system, the Joint Operational Data Interchange (JODI), is hosted upon the Hewlett-Packard CMW. JODI has been approved by the Secret and Below Interoperability (SABI) Program Office and has been successfully fielded by NRL and CNMOC at numerous Navy facilities. TCS re-implemented the JODI capability on Sun’s Trusted Solaris operating system for an Air Force customer. TCS has successfully fielded two TGS systems for this customer and the new system is currently under the SABI process. Because the new TCS system is practically identical to the JODI system, SABI approval is anticipated by 3Q99.
